Tackle Football
Wheatland Junior Pirates (formerly WYFC) is a youth football and cheer feeder program for Wheatland Union High School. Originally established in 1996 to help the youth of the Wheatland & Plumas Lake communities learn the basic fundamentals of football/cheer. Participants range in age from 4 years old to 14.
Age & Weight Divisions
Teams are organized to promote fair competition and player safety.
Typical divisions may include:
- 8U Tackle Football – Introduction to contact with strong emphasis on fundamentals and safety
- 10U Tackle Football – Continued skill development and controlled contact
- 12U Tackle Football – Expanded playbooks and positional responsibilities
- 14U Tackle Football – Advanced fundamentals and preparation for high school football
Final division placement is determined by weigh-ins and roster sizes.
Player Development Philosophy
Our philosophy is rooted in development over wins and losses. Coaches focus on:
- Teaching proper blocking and tackling techniques
- Building football IQ and positional understanding
- Ensuring meaningful playing time for all athletes
- Developing confidence, accountability, and teamwork
Practices and games are structured to align with age-appropriate expectations.
Coaching & Volunteers
All teams are led by certified volunteer coaches who are committed to providing a positive and instructional experience.
Coaching requirements include:
- Background checks
- Coaching certifications and trainings
- Compliance with rules, safety protocols, and codes of conduct
Parents and guardians are encouraged to volunteer as coaches, team parents, or support staff.
Practice & Game Schedule
- Practices: Typically held 3-4 times per week
- Games: Played on weekends, most often Saturdays
Practice schedules, locations, and game calendars will be shared once teams are formed and certified. Adjustments may occur due to weather, field availability, or league coordination.
